I notice the city center duller than I expected; roads are unfinished, bar signs are unsecured and the movie theater doesn't light. It is as if all construction workers and electricians left in a hurry, to watch a soccer game between Who Cares United and Poor Salary City; and to become so exhausted and miserable by the 0-0 score, that they couldn’t muster any energy to return. I knew the city wasn’t wealthy, but now eleven years later, the city looks sad. And then develops the suspicion that it wasn’t poor because it was young and immature, but because it was depressed, and even after eleven years it still hadn’t climb out of it. All it accomplished was the superficial remodeling of a chain store and the barricading of a fish-and-chips shop that had the wonderful ability of also selling candy.
